Since 1996 The Mountain Institute has worked in the world’s longest mountain range. Without Patrick, it took me a very long time to piece together some kind of identity, and even now, 13 years later, it feels false, because he hasn’t been here to see it. Mauna Loa (4,169 m or 13,678 ft) is the largest mountain on Earth in terms of base area (about 2,000 sq mi or 5,200 km2) and volume (about 18,000 cu mi or 75,000 km3).
There on the mountain top with only the birds and shy animals for company, I had the space and peace to deal with all sorts of issues that beset me on every side. Though the mountains here don’t see temperatures below zero, the fast changing mountain climate does pose a challenge.
Many times, people look at something they truly desire and allow themselves to be discouraged by the enormity of the mountain before them. On the right was Rocks Mountain and Calvary Rocks, now much closer than it had looked earlier in the day. Much more of Massanutten Mountain was visible and most of Knob Mountain could be seen as well.
After a little more ascent, the trail intersected the Furnace Mountain Trail a little over a half mile from Blackrock. You will always find a great time when you visit the spectacular place of Arizona. It is about the Mountain of Gold and how I found it. I hope you enjoy my stories!
As the trail was about two swing left, there was a fairly extensive outcrop with a view to the right. Or people misgauge the time it will take to scale the mountain and then descend, and end up spending an unpleasant and possibly life-threatening night on the mountain.…
